Working with award-winning writer and editor Diana Hubbell, I traveled to Surat Thani province in southern Thailand for this story about a small farming community locked in a series of brutal land disputes with a palm oil plantation. It’s a tale of landless farmers existing in the shadows of a large corporation, of land rights issues and illegal occupations, threats, murders, and bullet-riddled vehicles. And, at heart, a story about a would-be agrarian utopia for those who never owned much of anything, drawn by the simple promise of a plot of land where they may grow enough food for themselves and future generations. It was an honor to work with Diana and members of the Southern Peasant’s Federation of Thailand on this piece. You can read the full long-form article HERE.
