I’ve been fortunate in my career to have worked on assignments all over Japan, and to count among my friends many Japanese colleagues and clients. But working in a place is very different to exploring it at your own pace, in your own time. Inevitably, you look at things differently. You’re looking at different things. On this personal trip through Tokyo, Kyoto, and northern Honshu, I decided to bring only my Rollei 6x6 camera, and to shoot only one roll of film each day. It was an exercise in restraint and observation. A kind of meditation on the decisions I make with a camera in my hand. Below is a small sample of photographs from that trip.
